The Australasian Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference is Australia's foremost gathering of the ICT research community and plays an important role in providing networking opportunities for the current and next generation of ICT researchers, technologists and managers. This year's conference features a day devoted to the opportunities and challenges of widespread rollout of broadband in Australia. We were delighted that in 2008 Adelaide hosted ATNAC for the first time. The theme for the conference, Information Networking - Enhancing Change in the Global Community, emphasised the role that telecommunications can, and should, play in building a better world. Networking has advanced rapidly over recent years with tremendous advances in speed in wireless and wired technologies. Use of the internet has evolved from passive reception of information to active creation of content. Education and medicine are being delivered at a distance, improving the opportunities and well-being of people in remote communities. There still remain, however, significant challenges ahead, especially in areas such as security, privacy, services to remote areas, and seamless connectivity across wireless technologies. Researchers, technologists and management met to discuss new ideas and debate future trends in information networking in a stimulating and informal environment. Over 120 people attended ATNAC 2008, representing 24 countries. ATNAC 2008 was held at the National Wine Centre of Australia in Adelaide. The National Wine Centre is just a short stroll from the Adelaide's acclaimed restaurant and night life, and only a one and a half hour drive from Australia's premiere winemaking districts in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Broadband Outlook DayFeaturing Australian and International Leaders in Broadband Delivery, Technology and ResearchMonday December 8 2008In 2008 we created a new initiative, focussed on the current hot topic of the Australian telecommunications industry, the National Broadband Network.
With the National Broadband Network tenders submitted on November 26,2008, the ATNAC Broadband Day provided a timely opportunity to hear from and meet industry leaders and analysts. The ATNAC Broadband Day included:
ATNAC also featured a splendid array of plenary sessions, including:
